CHRIS...Holy shit, wait...is said editor Bartle B. Bull III? I mean, with a name like that, chances are slim that it *isn't*. The BB3 I refer to would come from some fairly serious generational wealth - they had a killing pre-war co-op as well as a kind of equestrian estate up near me, in Millbrook, NY - where "the horsey set" play.
Interesting. I don't know, I only knew him as Bart Bull. He moved to or was from LA so hosted me out there a couple times. He was a little older, a lot hipper, kind of took me under his wing. When he recommended things I would listen. He turned me on to the Mac, fer gosh sakes!
Googling shows Bartle B Bull III to be 83 years old. Oh, wait, no his son, born 1970, was a war correspondent and writer. I don't know if that fits either, he wasn't eight years younger than lil' ol' me. Hmm, I can't tell. I know from Millbrook, and killer pre war co-op. Nobody writing for SPIN was making money so maybe it was a dilletantation for him? Hmm, maybe he'll stick his head up here.
Funny. Bart(le) Bull isn't a name you'd imagine would pop up often at all. I only learned of him from my perusing UWS pre-wars, where ppl still name their kids things like C. Stuyvesant McQuirk IV, and their prep school chums refer to them as Stuyvie. Yes, freakin' Stuyvie. The old money crowd is another world.
SPIN-related. I had always wondered what became of this bright little kid that lived next door to me for a short while when he was 8 or 9. Turns out, he became managing editor at Vibe & founding managing editor at Blaze.

Yes! I think I summered with Stuyvie.
(like that Monty Python sketch of the complaing old rich guys)

Most excellent anecdote!
I'm working with a lot of precocious young people lately, curious where they will go.
And there can't be that many Bart Bulls. Gotta be the same guy, maybe went on from the rock beat to combat riting. Sure, I'd believe it.
